Good news for preventive care
In the past, Medicare coverage of preventive care hasn’t been very extensive, but 2011 brings a new face to Medicare Part B. With the new health reform comes Preventive Care Act which offers an opportunity for Medicare beneficiaries to become more proactive about health risks.
Whether you have a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan or just plain Medicare, you will pay zero coinsurance or deductible for certain preventive care services. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force specifies which serives are included under Medicare.
Medicare Advantage, the alternative to a Medigap insurance and Medicare coverage, is not included in the Preventive Care Act. As a result, you may have to pay coinsurance and deductibles for tests and screens related to preventive care.
Services include screenings for:
Diabetes
Colon cancer
Prostate cancer
Breast cancer
Glaucoma*
Vaccinations include:
Flu
Pneumonia
Hepatitis B
*Only 80% of the Medicare-approved amount (after Part B deductible)
