Which Health Plan is Right for Me?
Without a doubt, the Original Medicare program has given vital health coverage and even been a lifesaver to millions of Americans over the years.
But as good as it is, Medicare was never designed to cover 100% of your medical care. Although Medicare costs have risen almost every year since the federal program’s inception in 1965, Medicare benefits have declined over the years in many areas. As a result, there are real gaps in Medicare coverage and, therefore, a real need for other health care options to supplement or even replace Original Medicare.
When might Medicare Advantage be the right choice?
Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) are optional Medicare plans offered by Medicare-approved private companies and available to people already enrolled in Medicare Part A (hospital) and Medicare Part B (medical). If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your plan will replace all of your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans can provide also additional coverage in other areas of health including dental, vision, and hearing. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also include prescription drug coverage.
All Medicare Advantage Plans cover emergency and urgent care, and are required to cover all services Original Medicare covers except hospice care. Original Medicare covers hospice care even if you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
For this comprehensive coverage you will normally pay a monthly premium. Medicare Advantage premiums are normally lower than Medicare supplement premiums, and some Medicare Advantage Plans do not require you to pay a premium at all. Out-of-pocket costs can vary widely, however, and should be carefully considered when you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Most Medicare Advantage Plans require you to see doctors and receive health services within a restricted network. In some cases, you are allowed to go outside the network at a higher cost, but Medicare Advantage is probably better designed for you if you are willing to stay within your plan’s network and do not expect to travel a lot during the life of your policy.
If you’re in generally good health and prefer to keep month-to-month expenses low, you’re probably in a good position to improve on your current health coverage by enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
