Medicare 101: How to Sign Up for Part C and Part D

Understanding Medicare Part C and Part D Coverage

Although Medicare enrollment begins with Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), many Americans rely on Part C and Part D for more complete healthcare coverage.

What Does Medicare Part C Cover?

Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare and often includes:

  • Hospital and medical coverage (just like Part A and B)

  • Additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, and wellness

  • Prescription drug coverage (often bundled)

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans:

What Does Medicare Part D Cover?

Medicare Part D is stand-alone prescription drug coverage, offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. It helps pay for:

  • Generic and brand-name medications

  • Many commonly prescribed drugs

  • Medications not covered under Part B

How to Enroll in Medicare Part C or Part D

Before you can enroll in Part C or Part D, you must first be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. Once enrolled, you can sign up:

When Can You Enroll?

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):

  • Begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month

  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month

  • Example: If your birthday is June 15, your IEP runs from March 1 to September 30

📌 If your birthday is on the 1st of the month, your Medicare can begin the month before your birthday.

Missed IEP?
You may be able to enroll during:

  • The General Enrollment Period (Jan 1–Mar 31)

  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1–Mar 31, for switching Advantage plans)

  • A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) triggered by life events like moving or losing coverage

Contact Medicare Mall for help determining if you qualify for a SEP.

Is Enrollment in Part C or Part D Required?

No — Part C and Part D are optional. However, they can greatly enhance your coverage and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

If you delay Part D and don’t have creditable drug coverage, you may face late enrollment penalties, so it’s important to weigh your options early.
