The Uninsured Economy

According to CNN Health, the CDC recently reported that “almost 50 million Americans are without health insurance.”

The report refers to people of the age 18-64.  According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the high number of uninsured Americans is linked to the economy. The Kaiser Family Foundation is a research organization who provides information on the health insurance industry including news on Medicare and Medicare Supplemental Insurance. People are losing their jobs and as a result their health insurance. The total number of people without health insurance has increased by about 3 million from last year.

So what about people 65 and older? Luckily, as long as you’ve had a job that has paid into social security, you’re covered.

Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Medigap policies, however, are purchased through private insurance companies. Similar to typical health insurance, if you find yourself needing coverage when a health condition arises you may find trouble. To avoid this, you enroll during your Medigap Open Enrollment period.
