When it comes to Medicare Supplement Insurance, one of the key decisions you’ll face is choosing a specific Medigap Insurance provider. Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are standardized so a plan from company A is the same as a plan from company B. The only variable in this equation is the company and the rate which that company offers.

-Aetna
This Connecticut-based company serves Medicare beneficiaries in all 50 states. Aetna has an AM Best rating of A.

-Gerber
Gerber Life was named one of the Top 50 Performing Life & Health Companies in the U.S. and has an A rating.

-Columbian Mutual
Columbian Mutual has been in the business since 1882 and has an A rating.

-Forethought
With an A.M. Best rating of A-, Forethought is a “diversified financial services organization dedicated to providing innovative financial solutions for those planning for retirement and end-of-life needs.” (Forethought website)

-American Continental
American Continental Insurance (ACI) is rated A- by A.M. Best Company. Recently, Aetna acquired Genworth, ACI’s parent company, so technically this company is now part of Aetna.

-United Health Care
United Health Care is co-branded with the popular senior interest group, AARP to sell Medigap Insurance policies.  This company in an A (excellent) insurance company.

  1. I have aarp united health care advantage. Last year my Eye doctor said My insurance wouldn’t pay to correct drooping lid. I assume it’s considered cosmetic. But my stepdaughter takes thyroid supplement which caused her lid to droop, cutting her field of vision , and she still had to fight hard to get her insurance to pay. I have that as a result of cataract surgery. How would I know if a particular insurance plan would also not pay?
