Laughing leads to senior health improvement.
Did you laugh? Of course you did, this YouTube gem is sure to make you chuckle. Believe or not, by watching this video you just invested in your senior health. A new report published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health gives merit behind the notion that laughter is the best medicine.
According to the report laughing has “physiological, psychological, social, spiritual, and quality-of-life benefits.” The study points to the idea that a lifetime of laughter can improve immune function, help lower blood pressure, make you more resistant to depression and more susceptible to an all around good mood. A good health condition can lead to savings for senior health insurance and Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, which is great because health care costs these days can be nothing to laugh about.
Robin Dunbar, the lead author in the publication tells the Washington Post that if laughing, “triggers endorphin activation, then it may have direct [health] benefits, because there is a possibility that endorphins help to ‘tune’ the immune system.” So a good laughing session with your best friend could fend off the next flu virus going around. Speaking of which, research has shown that you are 30 times more likely to laugh around other people than you are being alone. This goes along with the idea the laughing is contagious. Similar to yawning, seeing others do it inspires you to follow suit.
So go out, laugh, and watch your health improve with every giggle. If in the end, it turns out that it actually does nothing for senior health, at least you got a good laugh out of it.
