Medicare costs changing for 2012

UPDATE: Learn about 2013 Medicare Rates and How They Affect You

The U.S Department of Health and Human Services made some important announcements this week

.Medicare prices changing

The 2012 Medicare Part B premium will raise $3.50, to $99.90 per month and the Medicare Part A deductible will raise from $1,132 in 2011 to $1,156 in 2012. Medicare Part B deductible, on the other hand will decrease by $22, from $162 in 2011 to $140 next year.

Medicare Part B includes support in coverage of physicians’ services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment, and other items. Most people paid $96.40 for Medicare Part B per month in 2011.

The Medicare Part A deductible is paid for by some Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans. This deductible must be met before receiving coverage for in-hospitalization expenses and only counts for one benefit period. Each benefit period is 60 days, so you could end up paying the deductible more than once if it was more than 60 days since your last hospital visit. With some Medigap plans, your coverage included payment for the Medicare Part A deductible even if you’re in a separate benefit period.

  1. You give me a $40.00 raise in Social Security, then you are going to take away $99.90 in 2012 for Medicare. You call that a raise, I call that deceiving the public thinking they are getting a raise and you in up taking our money so that we can have inusurance. I call this robbing the poor to give to the rich. More citizens should complain about this or we should have the right to not take the $40.00 inorder to not Half to Pay for our own Insurance that we should get from the government in our old age.

  2. Can you tell me the increase on medicare for 2013 and 2014? I believe this is being withheld from Seniors due to the upcoming election.

  3. the problem is at inception medicare was for seniors. now it covers everybody and their brother. it shouldn’t. STOP THE MADNESS.there are people getting medicare who shouldn’t!

  4. Kathleen…I think you are a little confused. They were taking out $96.50 for Medicare last year so your net “raise” is $36.50 ($40 minus $3.50). Not bad when you consider there has not been a “raise” for at least the last 2 years. “Raises” are based on the COLA index which was a negative value for the last couple of years so we’re lucky they didn’t SUBTRACT from the SS check. With the $22 decrease in the Part B deductible that’s $460 extra per year over last year (assuming you have to pay deductible).

The “poor vs. rich” propaganda promulgated by our socialist want-to-be President is nothing but a big fat lie (yes, I’m calling him a liar). Almost one half of all the people in the U.S. pay no Federal taxes at all. Of the other 50% who support those of us on SS, about 90% of that tax amount is paid for by the rich. So thank the rich, not knock them, ’cause without them we would be starving. They not only pay our SS they give our families jobs.

  5. Kathleen: You are incorrect. Medicare premiums for 2012 are only going up $3.50 per month, not $99.90. Please re-read the article for the correct information.

  6. Put someone in office that knows what they the are doing stop taking more than you are keeping of our money you crooks.

  7. The lady is mistken. While she may receive a $40.00 raise in Social Security 2012. The amount to be witheld for PartB is the amount she WAS PAYING IN 2011 plus a deduction in her ‘raise’ to bring her total 2012 Medicare Part B plan to $99.90. She is not losing as much as she states.

  8. If you have had Medicare previously then you have paid $96.40 this year, so the raise is $3.50. So quit complaining.
