Seven Reasons Not to Put Off Seeing Your Doctor

September 13, 2012

We all know how hard it can be to coax some children into going to see the doctor.

Senior and DoctorUnfortunately, getting some adults to go see the doctor can be just as difficult. Adults can be every bit as good as children at making excuses not to seek medical help or advice. “I feel fine” … “I don’t trust doctors” … “It’s too embarrassing to see the doctor” … “A doctor will just try to give me medications I don’t need” … and it goes on and on and on.

All it takes is one visit to a cancer ward – one chance meeting with someone who’s contracted a deadly disease that might have been stopped if medical attention hadn’t been delayed – to break down almost anyone’s resistance to going to the doctor.

That brings us to the #7 reason to see your physician:

7. Early Detection

Cancer Screening and early detection are the keys to preventing cancer or catching it in the earliest stages when it’s most treatable. Fear of hearing the dreaded “D” word discourages many people from getting annual checkups or even seeking medical help for symptoms they’re suffering, but consider the alternative. If you see your physician annually whether you have health concerns or not, there’s a good chance you’ll walk away with a clean bill of health. Think of the peace of mind you’ll have from knowing your health is in order and you should be able to go about your business worry-free for another year.

Having that visit to the doctor is even more important if something isn’t quite right with your health. You can’t address a problem if you don’t know about it, and there are countless little things that only your doctor may be able to point out. Your doctor is the one who can determine whether you’re at risk for a certain condition and, if you are, arrange for screenings that can save your life.

6. Longevity

What about longevity? Would you like to live to be a hundred? If so, your genes are an important factor in determining your chances. But so is a healthy lifestyle, and your physician is the one most qualified to make recommendations suited to your individual situation. Your doctor may recommend a diet or a particular treatment that can help you achieve your goal of living a long life. Even better, your doctor can help you get to a ripe old age while feeling younger than your years. If that isn’t worth making regular appointments to see your health care professional, I don’t know what is.

Regular visits to your doctor go hand in hand with your Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan in helping ensure prevention of cancer and other serious medical conditions. Remember, early detection and treatment can save your life!
