Seven Reasons Not to Put Off Seeing Your Doctor

September 13, 2012

“I’m a male and I don’t want a female doctor to check me there” … or vice versa.

Female DoctorOr how about “Doctors are in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. If I go for a check-up they’ll just prescribe a bunch of medications I don’t need and line their own pockets”?

Yes, we’ve heard all the reasons for not wanting to go to the doctor. When it comes to making excuses for not getting the medical attention and advice they ought to get regularly, some seniors are every bit as creative as their grandchildren can be in explaining to the teacher what happened to their homework!

Creativity is to be treasured, but not at the expense of your health. Here are some more reasons you can’t afford NOT to see your doctor regularly.

5.It Pays Off

Did I say “afford”? Did you know regular preventive care is likely to pay off big-time in the long run? Regular checkups and diagnostic procedures are the key to detecting many health concerns in their earliest stages, when the prognosis and chances for a full recovery are best. Whether you’re dealing with a serious condition such as cancer or heart disease, or an ailment that’s more irritating than life-threatening, the earlier you know what you’re up against, the better.

What they say about cars applies to our health. A little maintenance and problem prevention now is likely to save a lot of trouble in the future. And money. Not only can preventive care save your life, it can save you thousands of dollars over the course of your lifetime.

4.Maintaining your health means maintaining a quality of life you can cherish.

Since we’ve touched on maintenance, let’s go a little further down that road.

Too many people age before their time by letting little things go, figuring there’s nothing they can do once Father Time catches up with them.

Back to cars. Some people ignore regular maintenance of their vehicles, and it shows. You can see and hear those clunkers coming from a mile away—until they break down long before they had to. Other people drive older vehicles they’ve taken care of and enjoy reliable transportation for longer than they may have thought possible.

You don’t want to be a clunker. See your doctor whenever you’re due for a tune-up … or a check-up. Chances are you’ll keep running a lot longer and better.

3. You’ll feel better, too.

If all your parts are running well, you won’t feel run down. Sticking to a healthy lifestyle and eating right are vital, but so is seeing your health care professional on a regular basis. At the first sign of trouble, go for that examination. You don’t come with a “check engine” light, so you’ve got to be vigilant. If something doesn’t feel right, see your doctor immediately, because that will increase your chances of feeling great!

Regular visits to your doctor go hand in hand with your Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan in helping ensure prevention of cancer and other serious medical conditions. Remember, early detection and treatment can save your life!
