Healthcare Debate: Round Two — Obama and Romney Make Little Mention of Healthcare

So where do we stand as Election Day closes in?

Republican vs. Democrat HeartBoth candidates clearly agree that Medicare needs reforming. The specifics—or lack of specifics—in their respective plans are on the table, and the American electorate will speak its mind on Nov. 6.

Although there’s much Pres. Obama and Gov. Romney disagree on as far as healthcare is concerned, both candidates have given every indication that they consider Medicare promises made to current recipients inviolable. As Romney stated during the first televised debate, “Neither the President nor I are proposing any changes for current retirees or near retirees either to Social Security or Medicare.” Even Romney’s call for the partial privatization of Medicare is usually worded in a way that suggests scrapping Medicare is the farthest thing from the candidate’s mind.

Pres. Obama, meanwhile, speaks of Medicare in the same reverent terms, always suggesting that any cuts his administration introduces to Medicare are aimed at protecting and preserving Medicare.

In other words, both candidates clearly are intent on assuring people currently receiving Medicare benefits or nearing Medicare eligibility that Medicare will be there for them as promised. In a year with its share of bad news, that’s good to know.
