Seven Tips for a Ghoulishly Great Halloween

  1. Young Boy Carving PumpkinsTry your hand at pumpkin painting. It’s a lot safer than carving, and it offers a  ot more possibilities. You can make hair out of yarn and paste on as many funny or scary features as you can think of. Have a contest to see who can create famous faces that can be recognized. Or just find out who can create the pumpkin face that scares the most people out of their wits!
  1. Organize a trip to a pumpkin patch. Many cities and towns across the country have pumpkin patches within easy distance, and it’s great fun to get out and pick out your own pumpkin for dec
orating or baking. See if you can find a pumpkin that reminds you of Charlie Brown or Richard Nixon. There’s got to be one of those somewhere. Or just pick out the plumpest, tastiest-looking specimen you can find. If you play your cards right, you might even find the elusive Great Pumpkin!
  1. How about getting a group of seniors together and recording a Halloween-themed video? A remake of Thriller? What about a 2012 version of that old graveyard smash, Monster Mash? A Halloween skit? A seniors-only version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre? Who knows? If you post your video to YouTube, it could go viral!
  1. Best of all—if you have the option—is trick or treating with the grandkids. It’s tried and true … and nearly always provides memories that last a lifetime.

If your own grandchildren don’t live nearby, why not bring the Halloween experience to children who may be shut in during this Halloween season? Getting together with a few friends and making arrangements to deliver treats and smiles to a children’s ward in a hospital or foster home could result in an experience some lucky kids—and some lucky seniors—won’t soon forget.

  1. I have been trying to think of some fun activities I can do with my nieces this Halloween. So thank you for mentioning that pumpkin patches are a great idea since they can pick out their very own that way. I’ll be sure to look at the Halloween pumpkin patches in the area so that I can go hunting for the biggest one there is with my niece.
