Decorations
Kipplinger contributing editor Cameron Huddleston offers some great tips on how to save on Halloween decorations. She offers such tips as:
- buying inexpensive fabric and draping it around the front door
- spray-painting fallen branches and sticks black and putting them in a planter outside or a vase inside
- hanging homemade ghosts on branches
- taping bats made of black construction paper to walls
- stuffing an old shirt and pants to create a “body” you can hang over a balcony or set on a bench outside
Huddleston also suggests checking out dollar stores for decorative items fitting the Halloween theme—and that’s definitely good advice that shouldn’t be overlooked.
If you’re planning a party on Halloween:
The same senior shopping principles apply. Don’t overspend. You can have a great time on Halloween without being hit hard by reality the next day—or when your next credit card statement arrives in the mail.
And keep this in mind. Every grandparent may be tempted to spoil his or her grandchildren just a bit. There’s often a temptation to shell out money on grandchildren even though that money could perhaps be put to better use. If your last name is Getty or Rockefeller, you probably don’t have to be concerned about how much money you spend on your grandkids. But if you’re like most seniors, you’re probably living on a fixed income and need to be prudent.
Which is the better lesson to teach your grandkids?
Is it that you should spend money at will, without regard to consequences? Or is it that you’ve got to live within your means, sometimes doing without things you don’t really need although you may be attracted to them? When you think about it, the example of being responsible with your money during Halloween season may be one more great gift you can pass down to your grandchildren—especially when you show them how you can have an unforgettable Halloween without overspending!
