A Look Outside My Window
Because I’m writing this from San Antonio, Texas, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Alamo City also places high on many lists of the best places to retire in America.
Aside from the internationally known Alamo and Riverwalk, there’s plenty in San Antonio to capture your attention. There are plenty of parks throughout the city, and numerous facilities for golf and tennis—which you can enjoy year-round.
According to US News, the median monthly rent for retirees is $660. Costs associated with housing are far less, of course, for people who’ve paid off their mortgages—and, among large cities in the United States, it’s far easier to pay off a mortgage in San Antonio than just about anywhere else. Housing costs in the city and surrounding area are much lower than in nearly all cities of similar size.
The Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio provides spectacular views and all the outdoor activities you’d want. Throw in some of the best Tex-Mex cuisine anywhere, a shot of George Strait with a sprinkle of mariachi, great museums and theaters, and the four-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, and you may find that retirement heaven you’re looking for right here in the Alamo City!
