Coming to a theater near you …
The Jackie Robinson Story, the 1950 movie chronicling the challenges Jackie Robinson had to overcome in his path to the major leagues, is a favorite of old-time baseball fans. But now there’s a new Jackie Robinson movie that fans of all ages can look forward to seeing.
42 will be in theaters across the country beginning April 12, and by most accounts it’s a film veteran baseball fans should appreciate. Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson, endorsed the script, and Don Zimmer, former major league manager and a teammate of Robinson’s in Brooklyn, reportedly said after viewing a screening of 42, “I thought it was right on target.”
Chances are you’ve figured out what the title is about. As Variety explains, “The numerical title is Robinson’s uniform number — which the MLB retired for all teams in 1997 to mark the 50-year anniversary of Robinson’s first game.”
Although Robinson’s number has been retired for 16 years, one of baseball’s newer traditions is the wearing of number 42 every season on Jackie Robinson Day. This season, most or all major leaguers are expected to wear Robinson’s number 42 during games held on April 15, the anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut.
42’s April 12 release will come just three days before the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s major league debut with the Dodgers. To younger moviegoers, 66 years may seem an eternity, but many Americans who lived through the Jackie Robinson era vividly remember Robinson’s impact not only on baseball but on society as a whole.
Fans of Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies will be interested in knowing Harrison Ford plays the courageous Branch Richey in 42. Other cast members are less well known, including Chadwick Boseman, who plays Robinson, and who jumped at the chance to portray the man Huffington Post describes as Major League Baseball’s “most influential figure.”
With a brand new baseball season just underway, fans of the national pastime have plenty to look forward to this spring. With the upcoming release of 42, fans of old-time baseball have one more thing to get excited about.
