Medigap Insurance Requirements and Medigap Under 65
Visitors to MedicareMall.com ask us a lot of great questions about Medicare supplement (or Medigap) insurance. Following are answers to some questions quite a few Medicare recipients and other people seem to be looking for answers to.
Am I required to buy a Medicare supplement policy if I have no other insurance?
Not at all. Medicare supplement plans are entirely optional, and you have no obligation to purchase a Medigap policy regardless of your current situation. If, for example, you’re satisfied with your Original Medicare coverage, you’re under no obligation to purchase any other insurance.
Then why should I consider Medigap?
Again, you’re under no obligation to do so. You should be aware, though, that Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) was never designed to cover 100% of your medical care. Although Medicare costs have risen almost every year since the federal program’s inception in 1965, Medicare benefits have declined over the years in many areas. As a result, there are real gaps in Medicare coverage and many people choose Medicare supplement insurance plans and the security they can provide by filling the gaps in Original Medicare coverage.
Are there other options I can consider?
Absolutely. Again, you’re under no obligations, and these options are voluntary.
Medicare Part C (also called Medicare Advantage) plans are optional Medicare plans offered by Medicare-approved private companies. Part C/Medicare Advantage plans replace your Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B coverage, and can also provide additional coverage in various areas of health including dental, vision, and hearing. Most Part C plans also include prescription drug coverage.
Are there other ways to get prescription drug coverage?
Yes. Medicare Part D plans are voluntary prescription drug plans available to anyone enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B. Part D prescription drug plans can be added to Original Medicare or provided through Medicare Advantage plans.
In my case, I’m on Medicare because I’m under 65 and disabled. Can I buy a Medigap policy?
You may be better off looking at the other options, as federal law doesn’t require insurance companies to sell Medigap policies to persons under 65. Call MedicareMall toll-free at (877) 413-1556 and we’ll be happy to discuss your best options with you.
